E-cigarettes: find the right electronic cigarette for your vaping style

E-cigarettes, also known as electronic cigarettes or vaping devices, include a wide variety of systems designed to vaporise e-liquid. From small and straightforward pod systems to powerful kits equipped with sub-ohm tanks, each device provides different levels of battery life, power, airflow and vapour production.

At Viper Smoke, the E-cigarettes category includes devices suitable for beginners and experienced vapers alike. Compact pods, complete kits, MTL electronic cigarettes, RDL systems and DTL devices make it possible to select equipment that genuinely matches individual vaping preferences.

How does an e-cigarette work?

An electronic cigarette uses a battery to supply power to a heating coil. The coil heats the e-liquid contained in the cartridge or tank and turns it into an aerosol, commonly referred to as vapour, which is then inhaled through the mouthpiece.

Depending on the device, the coil may be built directly into a replaceable cartridge or installed separately. E-cigarettes may also offer automatic or adjustable power, airflow control, several operating modes and different filling systems.

Pod, kit, box mod and e-cigarette: what is the difference?

A pod is generally the most compact format. It combines a relatively small battery with a cartridge containing the reservoir and coil. Its straightforward operation and portable dimensions make it particularly popular for MTL and RDL vaping.

A complete kit usually combines a battery or box mod with a tank and can provide greater battery life, power and adjustability. More advanced electronic box mods allow different atomisers to be installed and provide greater control over power, airflow and vapour production.

MTL, RDL or DTL: choose your inhalation style

Choosing an e-cigarette depends heavily on the preferred draw. MTL, or mouth-to-lung vaping, provides a relatively restricted draw in which vapour is first drawn into the mouth before being inhaled. This style is commonly associated with compact pods and lower-powered electronic cigarettes.

RDL provides a more open draw and increased vapour production while maintaining some restriction. DTL, or direct-to-lung vaping, uses much more open airflow and generally higher power to produce large quantities of vapour. Sub-ohm tanks and powerful kits are primarily designed for this style.

Which e-cigarette should a beginner choose?

For a first electronic cigarette, ease of use is often one of the most important factors. A pod or automatic starter kit reduces the number of settings required and can use simple cartridges or coils designed for moderate power.

Beginners may also prefer sufficient battery capacity for everyday use, straightforward filling and cartridges that are easy to replace. More advanced devices become useful when the user wants greater control over airflow, output power or vapour production.

Battery life, power and coil resistance

E-cigarette battery life depends mainly on battery capacity, expressed in mAh, but also on operating power and coil resistance. A compact low-powered MTL device can provide excellent endurance despite its smaller battery, whereas a powerful DTL kit consumes considerably more energy.

Coil resistance also changes the way an e-cigarette performs. Higher-resistance coils are generally operated at lower power and produce moderate vapour, while sub-ohm coils support a more powerful and airy vaping experience. Always follow the recommended operating range specified for the coil.

Which e-liquid should you use with an e-cigarette?

E-liquid should always be selected according to the electronic cigarette and coil. MTL pods and smaller coils generally work better with relatively fluid formulations such as balanced 50/50 PG/VG e-liquids. High-VG liquids require coils with sufficiently large e-liquid inlets.

Nicotine strength should also reflect the vaping style. Lower-powered MTL setups can generally be used with higher nicotine concentrations than DTL devices producing large quantities of vapour. Nicotine salt e-liquids are primarily intended for MTL devices operating at moderate power.

E-cigarettes and Swiss regulations

In Switzerland, electronic cigarettes with and without nicotine are regulated under federal legislation covering tobacco products and electronic cigarettes. Requirements notably concern market placement, composition, container capacities, labelling and protection of minors.

Electronic cigarettes with refillable reservoirs intended to receive nicotine-containing e-liquid must be sold empty. Systems using interchangeable single-use cartridges may be supplied with a cartridge attached to the device when the applicable regulatory requirements are met.

Leading e-cigarette brands at Viper Smoke

The vaping market includes many specialist manufacturers covering different vaping styles. Aspire is particularly known for pods and Nautilus systems designed around MTL vaping, while Vaporesso offers a broad selection of pods, kits and tanks covering MTL, RDL and DTL use.

Geekvape, Innokin, Lost Vape, Voopoo, Kiwi Vapor and other manufacturers also provide devices ranging from compact automatic pods to powerful dual-battery kits. This diversity makes it possible to compare battery life, ergonomics, power and cartridge or coil ecosystems.

Why choose a refillable e-cigarette?

A refillable electronic cigarette allows the main device to be reused while only consumable components are replaced when required. Depending on the system, the cartridge can be refilled, the coil changed or the complete pod replaced when it reaches the end of its useful life.

This design also provides considerably more choice in terms of e-liquid, nicotine strength and device settings. Regular users can therefore adapt their vaping equipment to changing preferences instead of depending entirely on a prefilled disposable system.
