Vape Batteries: power and autonomy for electronic cigarettes

Removable batteries provide the energy required by many electronic cigarettes and box mods. Unlike a permanently integrated battery, they can be removed from the device, charged in a compatible external charger and replaced when depleted or worn.

Vape batteries are available in several formats, capacities and discharge ratings. 18650 and 21700 are among the most common sizes, while selected devices may also use 18350, 18500, 20700 or other formats.

18650, 21700 and other battery formats

Battery designations generally relate to approximate physical dimensions. An 18650 cell measures around 18 mm in diameter and 65 mm in length, while a 21700 is approximately 21 mm by 70 mm.

18650 batteries remain widely used in single- and dual-battery box mods. 21700 cells generally provide increased capacity and may also offer substantial discharge capability, making them particularly attractive for higher-powered devices.

Shorter cells such as 18350 batteries are mainly used in compact or specialised High End mods, with correspondingly lower capacity due to their reduced dimensions.

Single or dual-battery box mods

A single-battery device prioritises compact dimensions and relies on one cell for both output and autonomy.

Dual-battery mods use two cells and can generally provide increased runtime and greater power capability depending on device design.

When two batteries are used together, matching cells of the same model, age and usage history are generally recommended to maintain consistent behaviour between them.

Capacity and continuous discharge rating

Battery capacity is expressed in milliamp-hours, or mAh. Higher capacity generally indicates greater potential runtime but does not alone determine whether a cell is suitable for high-power operation.

Continuous discharge current is equally important. Expressed in amperes, it indicates how much current the cell can continuously deliver within its intended operating limits.

There is often a trade-off between maximum capacity and discharge capability, meaning the battery with the highest mAh rating is not automatically the best option for high-output vaping.

Choosing a battery for your vaping power

In a regulated electronic mod, the chipset controls voltage and current to reach the selected wattage. As output increases, battery demand also rises.

Low-powered MTL vaping generally places relatively modest demand on the cell, making capacity an important consideration. Higher-powered RDL and DTL setups require greater attention to discharge capability.

Coil resistance should not be considered in isolation on a regulated device. Selected wattage, number of batteries and chipset operation also influence the current required from each cell.

Batteries and mechanical mods

Mechanical mods do not use a chipset to regulate output or provide the same electronic protections as regulated devices. Battery voltage is applied directly to the build, making a clear understanding of Ohm's law essential.

Lower resistance increases current demand. Users therefore need to know the cell's continuous discharge limit and accurately measure final build resistance before use.

Mechanical devices are intended for experienced users who can assess battery condition, resistance, potential short circuits and complete setup compatibility.

Charging, transporting and maintaining vape batteries

A compatible external charger is generally a convenient way to charge removable vape batteries, particularly when several cells are used.

Loose batteries should never be carried freely in pockets or bags with coins, keys or other metal objects because their terminals could be short-circuited. Always use a protective battery case.

The outer battery wrap must remain intact. A damaged wrap exposing the metal cell can create a short-circuit risk and the battery should not be used until correctly rewrapped or replaced.

When should a vape battery be replaced?

Lithium-ion cells gradually lose capacity through repeated charging and discharging cycles. Noticeably reduced runtime can indicate an ageing battery.

A battery showing deformation, leakage, unusual overheating, corrosion or significant physical damage should immediately be removed from service.

Used lithium-ion batteries should be taken to an appropriate battery recycling collection point rather than disposed of with ordinary household waste.
