RTA Atomizers: rebuildable atomizers with an e-liquid tank

An RTA, or Rebuildable Tank Atomizer, is a rebuildable atomizer equipped with an e-liquid reservoir. Unlike a clearomizer using factory-made coil heads, an RTA provides a build deck where users install their own heating elements and cotton. It therefore combines the customisation possibilities of rebuildable vaping with the convenience of a tank.

RTAs are primarily intended for vapers looking for greater control over their setup. Wire material, resistance, coil diameter, number of wraps, cotton, wattage and airflow can all be adapted. Depending on its design, an RTA can provide restricted MTL, more open RDL or powerful DTL vaping.

How does an RTA atomizer work?

An RTA combines a rebuildable deck with an e-liquid reservoir. The coil is secured to the deck and cotton is passed through the heating element. The ends of the wick are positioned in the appropriate channels so that e-liquid stored inside the tank can continuously feed the coil.

As e-liquid held in the cotton is vaporised, fresh liquid from the reservoir must replace it. Correct balance between liquid flow, cotton quantity, wattage and airflow is therefore essential to proper RTA operation.

Wicking: an essential part of an RTA build

Cotton placement is particularly important in a rebuildable tank atomizer. Excessively tight wicking can restrict e-liquid flow towards the coil and cause insufficient saturation, while inadequate or incorrectly positioned cotton can contribute to flooding and leaking.

The correct amount depends on coil diameter, deck design, liquid channels and e-liquid viscosity. Each RTA therefore has its own building characteristics and may require adjustment to achieve optimal wicking.

Single-coil or dual-coil RTA?

Single-coil RTAs use one heating element and generally require less power while consuming less e-liquid and battery energy. Single-coil configurations can be found on MTL, RDL and DTL atomizers depending on chamber and airflow design.

Dual-coil RTAs accommodate two heating elements and are frequently designed for more powerful, open vaping. With two identical coils connected in parallel, total resistance is approximately half the resistance of each individual coil. Two 0.40-ohm coils therefore produce approximately 0.20 ohm overall.

Dual coils also increase the active heating surface and generally require more power, e-liquid and battery capacity. Choosing between single and dual coil therefore depends on both desired performance and autonomy.

MTL, RDL or DTL RTA: choosing the right draw

RTAs are not exclusively designed for high-output subohm vaping. Dedicated MTL models use reduced chambers and restricted air inlets to provide a tighter draw at moderate wattages with relatively high-resistance builds.

RDL RTAs provide a middle ground between MTL and DTL. Airflow is more open while retaining some restriction, allowing lower-resistance builds and increased output without becoming as airy as a full DTL configuration.

DTL RTAs favour substantial airflow, larger chambers and builds capable of operating at higher wattages. Depending on deck design, they can accommodate a large single coil or two coils.

RTA, RDA and RDTA: what is the difference?

The primary difference between an RTA and RDA is the e-liquid reservoir. With a conventional RDA, liquid is regularly dripped directly onto the wick or supplied through a Bottom Feeder system. An RTA stores a larger amount of liquid and continuously feeds the build.

An RDTA combines characteristics of both systems. Its build deck is generally positioned above an e-liquid reservoir, with cotton extending towards the liquid supply. An RTA integrates the build within the tank's feeding architecture.

The right choice depends on vaping habits. RDAs prioritise immediate access to the build, while RTAs provide greater e-liquid autonomy. RDTAs offer an alternative architecture combining characteristics of both.

Coils, cotton, airflow and rebuildable safety

Building an RTA requires more technical knowledge than replacing a factory-made coil. Resistance should be measured after installation and the build checked for potential short circuits before use.

Wire material also influences performance. Kanthal A1, Nichrome Ni80 and stainless steel SS316L are commonly used for rebuildable atomizers. Simple round wire and more complex constructions such as Clapton can be selected according to deck dimensions and desired performance.

For subohm builds, battery discharge capability must correspond to the current required. Understanding Ohm's law, final build resistance and battery limits is particularly important with mechanical mods that do not provide the electronic protections found on regulated devices.
