DIY E-Liquid Additives for Fine-Tuning Your Recipes

DIY e-liquid additives are used to modify or refine specific aspects of a homemade recipe. Unlike a flavour concentrate, which provides the main flavour profile, an additive is generally used as a supporting ingredient to enhance a sensation, correct balance or emphasise a particular characteristic.

Depending on the product, additives can increase freshness, sweetness, acidity, roundness or alter the overall perception of a recipe. They are generally used at low percentages and should always follow manufacturer recommendations.

Cooling, sweetening and flavour-adjusting additives

Cooling additives are used to add freshness to fruity, beverage or menthol-style recipes. Their intensity can vary significantly, making accurate dosing particularly important.

Sweetening additives increase perceived sweetness without necessarily changing the main flavour profile. They can help round out a recipe or emphasise dessert-style notes.

Other additives can introduce acidity, soften certain flavours or modify the overall balance of an existing concentrate.

A supporting ingredient rather than a main flavour

An additive generally does not replace the main concentrate. Its purpose is to support an existing recipe by modifying one specific sensation.

For example, a fruit recipe can be made cooler, sweeter or sharper depending on the selected additive, while a dessert profile can be softened or rounded.

This is why additives are often used in much smaller quantities than standard flavour concentrates.

How to dose a DIY additive

Additive dosage depends entirely on the specific product. Some are highly concentrated and require only a very small percentage in the final recipe.

The best approach is to follow manufacturer recommendations and then make gradual adjustments in small test batches if necessary. Excessive dosing can quickly make a recipe too cold, too sweet or otherwise unbalanced.

Recording exact amounts makes it easier to reproduce a successful recipe or correct future versions.

Adding an additive to base and flavour concentrate

In a DIY recipe, an additive is generally used in addition to the PG/VG base and main flavour concentrate. It should therefore be included in the final volume calculation.

Depending on its carrier, it can also slightly affect the final PG/VG balance. Many flavour additives use propylene glycol as a carrier.

For accurate mixing, account for all ingredients including base, concentrate, additives and any other components.

Cooling additives for fruit and beverage recipes

Cooling additives are particularly common in fruit, menthol and beverage-inspired recipes. They add a cold sensation without necessarily replacing the main flavour profile.

The effect can range from mild freshness to a very intense cooling sensation depending on the product.

Gradual dosing helps prevent the cooling effect from overwhelming the main flavours.

Sweeteners and recipe balance

Sweetening additives can add roundness and emphasise dessert or fruit notes, but should be used carefully.

Excessive sweetness can quickly become unpleasant and some strongly sweetened formulations may contribute to faster coil build-up.

For this reason, gradual adjustment is generally preferable to using a high concentration immediately.

Maturation after adding an additive

The effect of an additive can evolve after mixing, especially in complex recipes containing several flavour concentrates.

Simple fruit recipes may stabilise relatively quickly, while more complex dessert profiles can require a longer maturation period.

Follow the recommendations provided for both the main concentrates and additives used.

Storing and handling DIY additives

Additives should be stored securely closed and according to manufacturer instructions. Heat, light and prolonged exposure to air can gradually alter certain aromatic characteristics.

Accurate pipettes, syringes or dropper systems are useful for measuring small quantities.

As with other DIY products, additives should always be kept out of reach of children and animals.
