DIY E-Liquid Concentrates for Creating Your Own Recipes

E-liquid concentrates are flavour preparations designed for DIY vape juice mixing. They allow users to customise flavour by combining a measured quantity of concentrate with a base made from propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG).

Unlike ready-to-vape e-liquid, a flavour concentrate is not intended to be vaped on its own. It must be diluted in a suitable base according to the manufacturer's recommended percentage.

A wide choice of flavour concentrates for DIY

DIY concentrates are available across a broad range of flavour profiles. Fruity recipes can feature berries, citrus fruits, tropical fruits, apples, peaches, melons and numerous combinations. Cooling versions add varying levels of freshness to the flavour profile.

Dessert concentrates can feature cream, vanilla, biscuits, pastries, cereals or nut-inspired notes. Classic profiles focus on tobacco-inspired flavours, while beverage recipes may evoke lemonade, cola, coffee and other drinks.

This diversity makes it possible to choose between straightforward single-profile flavours and more elaborate recipes combining several aromatic notes.

Fruity, cooling, dessert and classic concentrates

Fruit concentrates are highly versatile and can feature individual fruits or complex combinations. Cooling concentrates combine their main flavour with a refreshing sensation whose intensity depends on the recipe.

Dessert concentrates often contain several flavour layers and may require a longer maturation period. Classic concentrates range from relatively dry profiles to recipes combined with vanilla, caramel, nut or other complementary notes.

Every concentrate has its own formulation, making the manufacturer's recommended dosage and maturation time the primary reference.

How to dose an e-liquid concentrate

Concentrate dosage is generally expressed as a percentage of the final mixture. As a simple mathematical example, 10% represents 10 ml of concentrate in a final 100 ml preparation, while 15% represents 15 ml in 100 ml. These figures are examples rather than universal recommendations, and the actual percentage should follow the instructions for the specific concentrate.

The PG/VG composition of the base may also influence recommended dosage depending on the manufacturer and recipe.

Accurate measurement is preferable to approximate mixing. Increasing the percentage beyond the recommended level does not necessarily produce better or stronger flavour and can unbalance the recipe.

Choosing a PG/VG base for flavour concentrates

The selected base determines many of the physical characteristics of the finished e-liquid. A balanced 50/50 PG/VG base remains relatively fluid and versatile, while higher-VG compositions create thicker mixtures generally associated with increased vapour production.

The concentrate itself must also be considered. Many flavour concentrates use propylene glycol as a carrier and can therefore increase the final PG percentage.

The finished ratio should remain compatible with the vaping device. Smaller MTL coils generally require sufficiently fluid e-liquids, while RDL and DTL systems with larger wicking ports can often accommodate higher-VG formulations.

Maturing DIY e-liquid after mixing

After the concentrate and base have been combined, some recipes require a maturation period commonly referred to as steeping. This gives the different flavour notes time to develop and integrate throughout the mixture.

Required maturation time varies considerably. Straightforward fruit profiles can develop relatively quickly, while complex dessert and creamy recipes may require more time.

The concentrate manufacturer's recommendation should be used as the primary reference for steeping time.

Preparing e-liquid with a concentrate

Before mixing, determine the desired final volume, recommended concentrate percentage and target PG/VG ratio. This makes it easier to calculate the quantity of each ingredient required.

Ingredients can then be measured into a suitable bottle and mixed thoroughly to produce a homogeneous preparation.

Labelling the bottle with concentrate name, dosage, PG/VG ratio and preparation date makes it easier to monitor maturation and reproduce successful recipes later.

Concentrate versus ready-to-vape e-liquid

A DIY concentrate should not be confused with ready-to-vape e-liquid. Concentrate contains a flavour formulation intended for dilution and is not a finished vape juice by itself.

Ready-to-vape e-liquid already contains an appropriate combination of base and flavouring. DIY concentrate provides greater control because the user prepares the final volume and composition.

Flavour concentrates must therefore always be diluted according to their intended use before being used in an electronic cigarette.

Storing concentrates and DIY mixtures

Concentrates should be stored according to manufacturer instructions, properly closed and protected from conditions that could affect their quality. Heat, light and prolonged exposure to air can gradually alter certain flavour characteristics.

Close the bottle carefully after use and clean any residue around the dispensing tip when necessary.

Concentrates, bases and DIY preparations should always be kept out of reach of children and animals.
