Nicotine Salts

Nicotine salt boosters for e-liquids

Nicotine salt boosters are designed to add nicotine to nicotine-free e-liquids, shortfills, longfills and DIY preparations. They differ from traditional nicotine boosters through the form of nicotine used and the vaping sensation they provide. At a comparable concentration, nicotine salts generally produce a smoother throat sensation, making them particularly suited to vapers using low-powered equipment.

What is a nicotine salt booster?

A nicotine salt booster is a nicotine-containing base made from propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine or a combination of both, with nicotine in salt form. Like a regular booster, it is designed to be diluted into a nicotine-free preparation rather than used alone as a flavoured e-liquid. It increases nicotine content while also contributing to the finished volume and PG/VG ratio.

10 ml nicotine salt boosters

Nicotine salt boosters are generally supplied in compact bottles for mixing with nicotine-free liquids and bases. A 10 ml booster at 20 mg/ml contains a total of 200 mg of nicotine. Once diluted, this quantity is distributed throughout the complete finished volume. Final nicotine strength therefore depends on the starting volume, the number of boosters and the finished volume.

Nicotine salts vs traditional nicotine

The main difference concerns nicotine formulation and vaping sensation. Traditional freebase nicotine generally provides a stronger throat hit as concentration increases. Nicotine salts usually feel smoother at a comparable strength and are particularly associated with lower-powered MTL electronic cigarettes. The most suitable choice depends on equipment, desired concentration and personal preference.

Why choose a nicotine salt booster?

Nicotine salt boosters can be useful for vapers who want to add nicotine to a nicotine-free e-liquid while maintaining a relatively smooth throat sensation. This characteristic can be particularly relevant at higher nicotine concentrations. Nicotine salts are therefore commonly associated with compact pods and MTL devices producing moderate amounts of vapour.

How to calculate nicotine salt strength

The calculation is identical to that used for a traditional nicotine booster. Multiply booster volume by concentration to determine the total amount of nicotine, then divide this amount by the final volume. A 10 ml booster at 20 mg/ml provides 200 mg of nicotine. Added to 50 ml of nicotine-free e-liquid, it produces 60 ml at approximately 3.33 mg/ml.

Nicotine salts and MTL vaping

Nicotine salts are especially well suited to lower-powered MTL devices. This type of vaping generally uses a tighter draw, moderate vapour production and relatively high-resistance coils. Low power and suitable coil resistance are important considerations when using nicotine salt preparations.

Why avoid excessive power with nicotine salts?

High-powered equipment vaporises a larger quantity of e-liquid with each puff. With nicotine-containing liquid, this can deliver a greater quantity of nicotine over a short period. Nicotine salt preparations are therefore mainly associated with pods, MTL electronic cigarettes and other moderate-power devices. Final nicotine strength and equipment recommendations should always be considered together.

Nicotine salt boosters for shortfills

Nicotine-free shortfills can be completed with a nicotine salt booster when they are designed for additional liquid. A 50 ml shortfill in a 60 ml bottle, for example, provides enough space for one 10 ml booster. The exact quantity required depends on the desired final strength and bottle capacity.

Nicotine salt boosters for longfills

Longfills generally contain a measured quantity of flavour concentrate in a larger bottle. They are completed with base and, when required, nicotine. A nicotine salt booster can be incorporated into the recipe while considering flavour volume, neutral base, booster quantity and final volume.

Nicotine salt boosters for DIY e-liquids

For DIY preparations, nicotine salt boosters can be combined with neutral base and concentrated flavours. Calculations should be completed before mixing to achieve the intended nicotine concentration, PG/VG ratio and final volume. Every booster changes both nicotine strength and the overall composition.

Choosing the right PG/VG ratio

The PG/VG ratio of the booster directly influences the finished mixture. A 50/50 booster provides equal proportions of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine and can work well for many MTL and lighter RDL preparations. Choosing a booster close to the composition of the original liquid helps minimise changes to the intended ratio.

Do nicotine salt boosters dilute flavour?

Yes. Like any booster, they increase total volume without adding the flavour concentrates contained in the original recipe. Shortfills designed for booster addition generally take this dilution into account, while adding several boosters can reduce flavour intensity further.

How to mix nicotine salt boosters correctly

After adding the required boosters, close the bottle securely and shake thoroughly to homogenise the mixture. If the original container is too small, use a clean empty e-liquid bottle with sufficient capacity. The full final volume should always be thoroughly mixed before use.

Safety precautions for nicotine salt boosters

Nicotine is addictive and nicotine-containing liquids should be handled carefully. Avoid contact with skin and eyes, close bottles securely after use and keep them out of reach of children and animals. Always follow the manufacturer's warnings and the equipment recommendations associated with nicotine salt e-liquids.
