RDTA Atomizers: combining a rebuildable dripper and tank

An RDTA, or Rebuildable Dripping Tank Atomizer, is a rebuildable atomizer combining characteristics of both RDA and RTA systems. It provides a dedicated deck for installing custom coils and cotton while incorporating an e-liquid reservoir to supply the build.

The deck is generally positioned above the reservoir, with cotton extending towards the liquid supply openings. This architecture provides convenient access to the build while offering greater e-liquid autonomy than a conventional dripper.

How does an RDTA atomizer work?

In an RDTA, the heating element is installed on a rebuildable deck generally positioned in the upper section of the atomizer. The e-liquid reservoir sits underneath and cotton provides the connection between the liquid supply and coil.

As liquid held in the cotton is vaporised, it is progressively replaced by e-liquid from the reservoir. This arrangement retains relatively direct access to the coil and wick while eliminating the need to drip liquid as frequently as with a conventional RDA.

Correct cotton placement in an RDTA

Wicking is particularly important for reliable RDTA operation. Cotton ends must provide consistent e-liquid supply without excessively restricting the feeding openings. Depending on design, the wick may extend into the reservoir or simply reach the liquid ports.

Insufficient liquid supply can result in dry hits, while excessive cotton can restrict flow. Coil diameter, e-liquid viscosity and the design of the feeding system should therefore be considered when building.

Single-coil or dual-coil RDTA?

RDTA atomizers may be designed for either one or two heating elements. Single-coil configurations generally operate at more moderate wattages while reducing e-liquid and battery consumption.

Dual-coil builds increase the active heating surface and are frequently used for powerful, open vaping. With two identical coils connected in parallel, total resistance is approximately halved. Two 0.40-ohm coils therefore produce a final resistance of approximately 0.20 ohm.

Dual-coil builds generally require more power and consume more e-liquid. Final resistance should always be measured and checked before operation.

RDTA, RDA and RTA: understanding the differences

An RDA is a dripper without a conventional liquid reservoir. Users apply e-liquid directly to the cotton or use a compatible Bottom Feeder system. This provides very quick access to the build but limited liquid capacity without squonking.

An RTA also contains a rebuildable deck but integrates it within a tank architecture where dedicated channels continuously supply the wick with e-liquid.

An RDTA sits between these two concepts. Its deck resembles that of a dripper, while a reservoir generally positioned underneath provides additional liquid capacity. It can therefore appeal to users who enjoy RDA-style building while requiring greater autonomy.

Airflow and vaping styles with an RDTA

Many RDTAs focus on RDL and DTL vaping. Their relatively open decks can accommodate larger coils, while airflow systems are generally designed to direct air efficiently towards the heating element.

For DTL, open airflow combined with a relatively low-resistance build provides an airy draw and substantial vapour production. For RDL, more restricted airflow and a moderate build provide additional resistance during inhalation.

Some RDTAs are designed for more restrictive configurations, meaning the final draw depends on chamber dimensions, airflow openings, deck design and installed build.

Coils, e-liquids and RDTA safety

Like all rebuildable atomizers, an RDTA requires appropriate technical knowledge. Coils must be installed correctly, stabilised and measured before use. The heating element must not contact the chamber or top cap once the atomizer is assembled.

Kanthal A1, Nichrome Ni80 and stainless steel SS316L are commonly used wire materials. Depending on deck space, simple wire or more complex constructions such as Clapton coils can be installed.

E-liquid viscosity should also match the build and wicking system. RDL and DTL configurations can generally accommodate higher-VG liquids when the feeding openings provide sufficient flow.

For subohm builds, battery discharge capability must be appropriate for the current required. Understanding Ohm's law, final resistance and battery limits is particularly important when using mechanical mods.
