Drip Tips: mouthpieces for electronic cigarettes

A drip tip is the mouthpiece fitted to the top of a clearomizer, atomizer or selected pod system. It is the component that comes directly into contact with the lips and can influence comfort, draw sensation and the overall feel of the vape.

Drip tips are available in numerous formats, materials and shapes. The two most common standards are 510 and 810, and compatibility depends on the connector used by the clearomizer or atomizer.

510 or 810 drip tip?

The 510 drip tip uses a relatively narrow connection and is widely used on MTL clearomizers, selected RDL atomizers and compact vaping devices. Its narrower format generally supports a more concentrated draw.

The 810 drip tip is wider and is commonly used on RDA, RTA and subohm atomizers designed for RDL or DTL. Its larger opening supports increased airflow and higher vapour production.

A 510 drip tip cannot normally be fitted directly to an 810 connection without a suitable adapter, and vice versa.

Internal bore and draw characteristics

Beyond the 510 or 810 standard, the internal bore also affects airflow and mouthfeel. A narrower mouthpiece generally suits MTL vaping with more restricted airflow.

A wider bore is better suited to RDL and DTL setups where larger volumes of air and vapour are involved. Drip tip length also influences comfort and the distance between the lips and the heat source.

Resin, Delrin, Ultem, metal and other materials

Drip tips are produced from many materials, each providing a different feel. Resin is popular for decorative patterns and comfortable texture, while Delrin is widely used because it is lightweight and transfers relatively little heat.

Ultem is common on rebuildable and High End atomizers and is valued for its heat resistance and characteristic amber appearance. Metal drip tips, including stainless steel versions, provide a rigid and durable finish but can transfer more heat during high-output vaping.

Other options include acrylic, POM, glass, wood and composite materials depending on manufacturer and design.

Drip tips for MTL, RDL and DTL

MTL setups generally use relatively narrow drip tips that complement restricted airflow and provide a concentrated draw.

RDL mouthpieces are often slightly wider, allowing increased airflow while retaining some restriction.

DTL atomizers commonly use wide 810 drip tips to support substantial airflow and avoid unnecessarily restricting high-output subohm performance.

How to choose a compatible drip tip

The first consideration is the connection standard. Check whether the clearomizer or atomizer uses 510, 810 or a proprietary mouthpiece format.

Internal bore, length, shape and material can then be selected according to preferred draw and comfort. Narrower tips generally suit tighter vaping, while wider and shorter mouthpieces are often preferred for DTL.

O-ring design should also be considered. Some drip tips carry their own seals, while others rely on O-rings already installed in the top cap.

When should a drip tip be replaced?

A drip tip can last a long time when properly maintained, but it should be replaced if cracked, deformed, heavily worn or no longer fits securely.

In some cases, a worn O-ring can cause a loose fit even when the mouthpiece itself remains undamaged.

Replacement may also simply be chosen to improve comfort, modify draw characteristics or personalise the appearance of the electronic cigarette.

Cleaning and maintaining drip tips

Because the drip tip comes into direct contact with the lips, regular cleaning is recommended. E-liquid residue, condensation and dust can gradually accumulate inside the mouthpiece.

Cleaning methods should suit the material. Many drip tips can be rinsed and thoroughly dried, although some specialised materials require additional care.

Inspect the O-rings during reassembly to maintain a secure fit.
