Cotton

Vape Cotton: essential wicking material for rebuildable atomizers

Cotton is a central component of rebuildable atomizers. Installed through or around the coil, it absorbs e-liquid and transports it towards the heating element so that it can be vaporised. Cotton quality, density and positioning directly influence wicking, flavour delivery and vaping consistency.

Vape cotton is specifically prepared for use in rebuildable atomizers and can be supplied as strips, shoelace-style wicks, pads or loose fibre depending on the manufacturer.

Cotton for RTA, RDA and RDTA atomizers

Cotton is used in the main rebuildable atomizer categories including RTA, RDA and RDTA. In an RTA, the wick must provide regular liquid supply from the reservoir while helping prevent leaks.

In an RDA, cotton absorbs e-liquid applied directly to the build or delivered through a Bottom Feeder system. In an RDTA, the wick generally connects the build deck to the reservoir positioned underneath.

Wicking, density and e-liquid supply

Wicking describes the cotton's ability to absorb and transport e-liquid towards the coil. Cotton packed too tightly can restrict liquid flow and cause dry hits, while insufficient cotton may fail to fill the coil properly and can contribute to leaking.

The correct density depends on coil diameter, power, PG/VG ratio and atomizer design. High-VG e-liquids are more viscous and generally require particularly efficient wicking.

Shoelaces, pads and cotton strips

Shoelace-style cotton is particularly convenient because a reinforced end makes it easier to pass the wick through the coil.

Cotton pads provide greater freedom to cut the exact width required for a particular build.

Strips and loose fibre are also suitable for experienced users who regularly adapt wick thickness to different atomizers and coil diameters.

How to install cotton correctly

The wick should fill the inside of the coil without becoming excessively compressed. A slight amount of resistance should generally be felt when pulling the cotton through, while the coil should remain in shape.

The ends are then trimmed and, where necessary, thinned or fluffed according to atomizer design. In an RTA, they usually need to sit correctly inside the liquid channels without completely blocking them.

Excessive cotton can restrict e-liquid supply, while insufficient cotton can contribute to leaking. Wick quantity should therefore be adapted to each build deck and coil.

Choosing cotton for MTL, RDL or DTL vaping

MTL vaping at moderate output vaporises relatively small amounts of e-liquid, so a consistent but moderate wicking rate is generally sufficient.

RDL and DTL setups operate at increased output and require cotton capable of supplying larger quantities of e-liquid, particularly with complex coils and large heating surfaces.

Cotton selection should therefore take account of atomizer type, coil diameter, output and e-liquid viscosity.

When should vape cotton be replaced?

Cotton should be replaced when it becomes heavily discoloured, contaminated with deposits or when flavour quality drops noticeably. An altered or burnt taste can also indicate that the wick needs replacement.

Replacement frequency depends strongly on e-liquid composition. Highly sweetened, dark or heavily flavoured liquids can cause faster build-up on both wick and coil.

Changing cotton is also useful when moving between very different flavours to reduce unwanted flavour carry-over.

Cotton and coil maintenance

When replacing cotton, the condition of the coil should also be checked. Deposits can reduce heating quality and affect flavour delivery.

Reusable rebuildable coils can often be cleaned once the old cotton has been removed, provided the coil remains in good physical condition.

New cotton should always be thoroughly saturated with e-liquid before the first activation to reduce the risk of immediately scorching the wick.
