RDA Atomizers: rebuildable drippers for custom vaping

An RDA, or Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer, is a rebuildable atomizer that operates without a conventional e-liquid tank. Commonly called a dripper, it allows users to install their own coils and cotton while adjusting the build to their preferred vaping characteristics.

Unlike a clearomizer using factory-made coil heads, an RDA provides direct access to the build deck. Experienced users can therefore select wire material, coil diameter, number of wraps, final resistance, cotton quantity and coil position relative to the airflow.

How does an RDA work?

An RDA generally does not include the large e-liquid reservoir found on a conventional RTA or clearomizer. Instead, e-liquid is applied directly to the cotton through the mouthpiece or after removing the top cap. The cotton then retains liquid inside the well beneath the build deck.

This direct feeding system explains the term dripper. As capacity is limited by the depth of the juice well and amount of cotton, users need to replenish e-liquid regularly.

Bottom Feeder and BF RDA systems

Many RDAs can also be used with Bottom Feeder or squonk systems. A compatible box contains a flexible internal bottle connected to the atomizer through a hollow BF 510 pin.

Squeezing the bottle sends e-liquid upwards into the RDA juice well and supplies the cotton without requiring the top cap to be removed repeatedly. A compatible BF pin and appropriate squonk mod are required for this configuration.

Single coil or dual coil RDA?

An RDA may be designed for one coil, two coils or provide a versatile deck supporting different configurations. Single-coil builds generally require less power and consume less e-liquid than comparable dual-coil setups.

Dual-coil builds use two identical heating elements simultaneously. When two equal coils are connected in parallel, total resistance is approximately half the resistance of each individual coil. Two 0.40-ohm coils therefore produce a final resistance of approximately 0.20 ohm.

This must be considered carefully when building. Dual-coil configurations can quickly reach very low resistances and require substantial power. Final resistance should always be checked with suitable equipment before use.

Airflow, chamber and coil position

RDA performance depends on more than coil resistance. Coil position relative to the air inlet is particularly important. Depending on design, airflow can reach the heating element from the side, underneath, at an angle or through multiple openings around the chamber.

Wide airflow generally supports open DTL vaping and high-output builds. More restricted airflow can provide RDL characteristics and is used on selected drippers designed for a tighter draw.

Chamber volume, top-cap geometry and mouthpiece dimensions also influence the vaping experience. These variables provide extensive opportunities to customise draw and vapour characteristics.

RDA, RTA and RDTA: understanding the differences

An RDA is distinguished primarily by the absence of a conventional tank surrounding or feeding the build deck. This provides very quick access to coils and cotton but requires regular dripping unless a Bottom Feeder system is used.

An RTA, or Rebuildable Tank Atomizer, combines a rebuildable deck with an e-liquid reservoir that continuously supplies the cotton. An RDTA combines elements of both concepts, generally positioning an e-liquid reservoir beneath the build deck.

RDAs are particularly interesting for users who prioritise easy access to their builds and frequently change coils, cotton or e-liquid.

Coils, cotton and rebuildable atomizer safety

Using an RDA requires more technical knowledge than operating a clearomizer with factory-made coils. The heating element must be secured correctly, resistance measured and potential short circuits checked before use.

Cotton should pass through the coil without excessive compression and its ends should reach the juice well correctly. Poor wicking can affect liquid supply and overall performance.

For subohm builds, battery discharge capability must correspond to the current required by the build. Understanding Ohm's law and battery safety is particularly important when using mechanical mods, which do not provide the electronic protections normally found on regulated devices.
