Bottom Feeder Box Mods: squonk devices for RDA atomizers

A Bottom Feeder box mod, often called a BF or squonk mod, is specifically designed to feed a rebuildable atomizer from an e-liquid bottle installed inside the device. Unlike a conventional box mod, it uses a hollow 510 connection allowing liquid to travel upwards when the flexible bottle is squeezed.

This system is primarily used with Bottom Feeder-compatible RDAs. It retains the benefits of a dripper, including direct access to the build and extensive coil customisation, while eliminating the need to manually drip e-liquid onto the cotton every few puffs.

How does a Bottom Feeder box work?

The device contains a flexible bottle connected to the 510 connector through a tube. Pressing the bottle pushes e-liquid upwards through the BF pin and directly into the RDA juice well.

When pressure is released, part of the excess liquid can return to the bottle depending on system design. This bottom-fed supply method is the origin of the term Bottom Feeder.

Squonking: feeding an RDA without removing the top cap

Squonking refers to squeezing the internal bottle to supply e-liquid to the dripper. It replaces traditional dripping, where users remove the top cap or apply liquid directly through the mouthpiece.

This allows an RDA to retain its compact build deck while gaining a much larger e-liquid reserve, making drippers considerably more convenient for everyday use.

Regulated or mechanical BF box mods

Bottom Feeder mods are available in regulated electronic and mechanical versions. A regulated squonk mod uses a chipset to control output and provide electronic protections against several operating problems.

Depending on the device, wattage can be adjusted accurately to match the installed coil. This makes regulated BF mods particularly suitable for users who want squonk functionality together with the familiar controls of an electronic mod.

A mechanical BF mod operates without electronic power regulation. Output depends directly on battery voltage and decreases as the cell discharges. Mechanical devices require detailed knowledge of Ohm's law, final resistance and battery discharge limits.

Which atomizer should you use with a Bottom Feeder box?

A BF box should be paired with an atomizer equipped with a hollow Bottom Feeder 510 pin. RDAs are the most common choice because their juice wells can be supplied directly from the internal bottle.

Many rebuildable drippers include both a conventional solid 510 pin and a hollow BF pin. The correct pin must be installed before fitting the atomizer to a squonk mod.

Atomizer diameter should also be considered. A wider mod platform can accommodate larger RDAs without significant overhang.

Single or dual coil on a squonk box?

A Bottom Feeder box can be used with single- or dual-coil RDAs when the device is compatible with the final build resistance. Single-coil configurations generally require less power and consume less e-liquid and battery energy.

Dual coils increase the active heating surface and can produce considerably more vapour, but two identical coils wired in parallel also reduce total resistance. Two 0.40-ohm coils, for example, produce approximately 0.20 ohm overall.

Very low resistance increases both required output and battery current. Mod capability and battery discharge ratings must therefore be appropriate for the build.

BF bottles, filling and maintenance

The Bottom Feeder bottle is an essential part of the system. It is generally made from a flexible material so it can be squeezed easily. Depending on the mod, the bottle may be completely removed for filling or refilled through a dedicated system.

The tube connecting the bottle to the 510 connector should remain clean and properly positioned to prevent leaks or inconsistent feeding.

Over time, a bottle can become harder, retain strong e-liquid aromas or show signs of wear. It should then be replaced with a compatible BF bottle.

Bottom Feeder mods and battery safety

As with any device using removable batteries, safe operation depends on the battery type, its physical condition and the current required by the build. Battery wraps should remain intact and discharge capability must suit the selected resistance.

Regulated mods provide electronic protections but still require appropriate batteries. Mechanical BF devices demand additional technical knowledge because they do not electronically limit power delivered to the coil.

Final resistance should always be measured before operating a rebuildable setup and the build must be checked for potential short circuits.
