Vape Pods: compact and straightforward electronic cigarettes

A pod is a compact electronic cigarette combining a rechargeable battery with a cartridge containing e-liquid and a heating element. Smaller and generally simpler than a traditional box-and-tank kit, pod systems are particularly convenient for users looking for portable and accessible everyday vaping.

Modern pod systems cover a wide range of vaping styles. Some focus on restricted MTL at moderate output, while others provide more open RDL vaping with increased vapour production. Depending on model, devices may use integrated-coil cartridges, replaceable coils, automatic or adjustable output and airflow control.

Integrated-coil cartridges or replaceable coils

Many pod systems use cartridges with the heating element integrated directly into the pod. When the coil reaches the end of its useful life, the complete cartridge is replaced. This makes maintenance particularly straightforward.

Other devices use reusable cartridges with replaceable coils. The tank section can therefore be retained while only the heating element is changed. This often provides a broader selection of resistances and greater control over vaping characteristics.

Refillable pods or prefilled cartridges

Refillable cartridges allow users to select a compatible e-liquid according to flavour, nicotine strength and PG/VG ratio within the limits of the device.

Prefilled cartridges focus more strongly on convenience. The e-liquid is already contained inside the pod and the complete cartridge is replaced when empty, eliminating manual filling.

MTL or RDL pod systems

Most pods are designed for MTL or RDL vaping. MTL provides a more restricted draw and moderate vapour production, generally using higher-resistance coils and lower output.

RDL provides increased airflow and vapour while retaining some draw restriction. It generally uses lower resistance and higher output than MTL without necessarily reaching the performance of a full-size DTL subohm kit.

Selected pods can move between both styles through different cartridges, resistances or airflow settings, making modern pod systems particularly versatile.

Battery life and pod output

Battery capacity influences autonomy but should always be considered together with operating power. A compact low-output MTL pod can provide good runtime from a relatively small battery, while more powerful RDL devices consume energy more quickly.

Some devices automatically select output according to the installed cartridge. Others allow users to adjust wattage manually to change vapour temperature, responsiveness and production.

Recent devices generally use USB-C charging, while charging time depends on battery capacity and supported charging current.

Which e-liquid should you use with a pod?

E-liquid selection primarily depends on coil resistance, wattage and cartridge wicking openings. Balanced 50/50 PG/VG formulations are generally particularly appropriate for moderate-power MTL pods.

Lower-resistance RDL cartridges may support higher-VG liquids when their wicking system is designed for increased viscosity. Higher VG means thicker e-liquid and therefore requires sufficient liquid flow.

After filling a new cartridge for the first time, allow several minutes for the wick to become fully saturated before vaping. Proper priming helps prevent premature coil damage.

How to choose the right pod

Important factors include draw style, battery capacity, cartridge resistance, filling system and available adjustments. Users prioritising simplicity may prefer automatic integrated-coil pods, while those wanting greater control can select devices with adjustable wattage and airflow.

Cartridge and coil availability should also be considered. Each platform uses its own ecosystem and externally similar pods are not necessarily interchangeable.

Device format is another consideration. Some pods are extremely slim and lightweight, while others provide larger batteries, displays and ergonomics closer to compact pod mods.
