Vape coils and resistances: the heart of your e-cigarette

Coils are essential components of electronic cigarettes. Installed inside a tank, cartridge or atomiser, they heat e-liquid and produce the vapour inhaled by the user.

Coil choice directly affects vapour production, flavour delivery, e-liquid consumption, required power and draw style. Selecting a coil that is genuinely compatible with the device and intended vaping style is therefore essential.

How does a vape coil work?

A coil consists of a resistive heating element combined with absorbent material, usually cotton. The cotton absorbs e-liquid and the heating element increases in temperature when power is supplied by the battery.

The e-liquid held in the cotton is then vaporised. To avoid burning the cotton or shortening coil life, the wick must remain sufficiently saturated and the coil should always be used within the manufacturer's recommended power range.

Mesh coils, traditional coils and different heating technologies

Mesh coils use a perforated metal structure that provides a relatively large heating surface. This design generally promotes fast and even heating together with consistent flavour delivery.

Traditional coils use resistive wire wound into a spiral. They remain available in selected systems and can still provide excellent performance depending on their design, cotton structure, liquid inlets and operating power.

Understanding coil resistance in ohms

Coil resistance is expressed in ohms using the Ω symbol. In general, higher-resistance coils operate at lower power and produce moderate amounts of vapour, while lower-resistance coils typically require more power and generate more vapour.

Ohm value should not be used alone to determine the correct wattage. Two coils with the same resistance may have very different operating ranges depending on their structure and heating technology. The manufacturer's specified wattage range should always be followed.

MTL, RDL and DTL vape coils

MTL coils are designed for mouth-to-lung vaping with a tighter draw and moderate vapour production. They often use higher resistance values and lower power, which can also help reduce e-liquid and battery consumption.

RDL coils provide a more open draw positioned between MTL and DTL. DTL coils are generally sub-ohm and designed for higher power, larger airflow and considerably greater vapour production.

Which coil should you use for different PG/VG ratios?

E-liquid viscosity should match the wicking capability of the coil. Balanced 50/50 PG/VG e-liquids are relatively fluid and suitable for a very wide selection of pod, MTL and RDL coils.

High-VG liquids such as 30/70 PG/VG are thicker and require coils with sufficiently large liquid inlets. They are mainly suited to RDL and DTL coils designed to wick more viscous formulations efficiently.

Which coil should you use with nicotine salts?

Nicotine salt e-liquids are primarily intended for lower-powered MTL vaping. They should be paired with suitable coils to keep vapour production moderate and maintain an appropriate nicotine delivery per puff.

For higher-strength nicotine salt liquids, coils around 1 ohm or above and moderate power are generally preferable, often below approximately 18 watts. Always follow the recommendations of the pod or tank manufacturer.

When should a vape coil be replaced?

A coil is a consumable component whose lifespan depends heavily on use. E-liquid composition, power level, vaping frequency and liquid consumption all affect how quickly it wears out. Very sweet or dark liquids can cause deposits to build up more quickly.

A noticeable loss of flavour, burnt or altered taste, irregular vapour production or poor wicking can indicate that replacement is required. A heavily worn coil will generally not return to its original performance after cleaning.

How to prime a new vape coil correctly

Before using a new coil, allow the cotton to become fully saturated with e-liquid. After filling the tank or cartridge, wait several minutes before vaping so that liquid can reach all parts of the wick.

With coils featuring visible cotton openings, a few drops of e-liquid can also be applied directly to the wick before installation. Start the first few puffs at slightly lower power and gradually increase to the desired setting.

Coil compatibility with pods and vape tanks

Vape coils are not universally compatible. Each coil family is designed for specific tanks, cartridges or kits. Some ranges work with several devices from the same manufacturer, but compatibility should always be checked before purchase.

At Viper Smoke, replacement coils are available for brands including Aspire, Vaporesso, Geekvape, Innokin, Lost Vape, Voopoo and many others. Check the exact name of your pod or tank together with the coil reference currently installed.
