Resistors and Coils
The Resistor, also known as the coil, is a central component of your e-cigarette. The Resistor is located inside the Atomizer (sometimes called the Clearomizer) and is responsible for vaporising your E-liquid. The Resistor is made up of a sort of small metal tube, inside which is cotton or sometimes fibre, which absorbs the E-liquid by capillary action. A resistive wire is wound around this cotton, and when your e-cigarette is activated the wire will heat up and the Resistor will evaporate the E-liquid.
Resistors play a vital role in the vapourisation of E-liquid. The resistor, often made of metal wires such as Kanthal, Nichrome or SS316, is the heating core of the Atomizer.
Regular replacement of resistors is essential to maintain vape quality. Over time, resistors become clogged and lose their effectiveness, which can alter the taste of the vapour and reduce the overall performance of the electronic cigarette.
Resistors are part of the consumables family and have a lifespan of around 2 weeks, so they need to be changed regularly. Of course, this lifespan varies according to the power (Watts) used, the frequency with which you vape and the type of e-liquid a rich e-liquid, for example, clogs the Resistor more quickly.
Several materials are used in the composition of a resistor or coil: the resistive wire can be made of Kanthal for even heating, SS316 for some resistors, which is much more reactive, and Nichrome for others. Some resistors are made up of a sort of mesh instead of a resistive wire, which will optimise the vapour and flavours because a larger surface area will be in contact with the cotton.
There are two categories of resistors: Sub Ohm (less than 1 Ohm) used mainly for high-wattage vaping and direct draw. MTL (indirect draw) resistors, generally from 0.8 Ohm upwards, used mainly for nicotine salts.
The Resistor, in the form of a coiled coil, is heated by the power supply from the electronic cigarette battery. This process generates heat which is transmitted to the E-liquid. This heat raises the temperature of the liquid, transforming it into vapour. The quality of the resistor has a direct influence on the quality of the vape produced, the flavour, the density of the vapour and the lifespan of the Atomizer.
Resistors are available in various configurations, offering different levels of electrical resistance, expressed in Ohms. Resistors with a lower ohmic value generate more vapour and higher heat, while those with a higher resistance offer a tighter draw and more moderate vapour production.
In short, resistors are crucial components of the electronic cigarette, responsible for heating the e-liquid to produce vapour. The choice and regular maintenance of resistors are essential for an optimal vaping experience.
