Atomizers: the core of an electronic cigarette

The atomizer is the part of an electronic cigarette where e-liquid is vaporised. It houses the coil or rebuildable setup, manages liquid supply and controls airflow towards the mouthpiece. Choosing the right atomizer directly influences draw, vapour production, required power and e-liquid compatibility.

There are several main atomizer families. Clearomizers use factory-made replaceable coils and focus on convenience. Rebuildable atomizers such as RTAs, RDAs and RDTAs allow users to install their own coils and cotton for greater control over vaping characteristics.

Clearomizer or rebuildable atomizer?

A clearomizer is the most accessible solution. It includes an e-liquid reservoir and uses a ready-made replaceable coil. Once the heating element is worn, it can simply be exchanged without building a new coil.

A rebuildable atomizer requires more technical knowledge but provides greater freedom. Users can select wire material, coil diameter, number of wraps, resistance, cotton and build position to tailor wattage, airflow and vapour characteristics.

RTA, RDA and RDTA rebuildable atomizers

An RTA combines a rebuildable deck with an e-liquid reservoir that continuously feeds the wick. This provides the convenience of a tank together with custom coil building.

An RDA, or dripper, does not use a conventional large reservoir and is fed directly with e-liquid or through a compatible Bottom Feeder system. An RDTA combines a dripper-style deck with an e-liquid reservoir generally positioned underneath the build.

MTL, RDL or DTL atomizers

MTL atomizers use restricted airflow and coils designed for lower output. Vapour production is moderate and balanced 50/50 PG/VG e-liquids are generally well suited to these configurations.

RDL provides a middle ground between MTL and DTL, with increased airflow and vapour production while retaining some draw restriction.

DTL atomizers use substantial airflow, lower resistance and higher output. High-powered subohm tanks naturally consume more e-liquid and battery energy.

Resistance, airflow and power

Coil resistance is one of the main factors determining atomizer behaviour. Higher resistance generally operates at moderate output with a more restricted draw, while lower resistance requires additional power and produces greater vapour.

Airflow should correspond to coil and wattage. Restricted airflow is appropriate for MTL, while larger openings support low-resistance and high-output vaping.

Always remain within the recommended wattage range of the installed coil. Excessive output can damage the wick, while insufficient power may result in inefficient vaporisation.

Choosing the right e-liquid

E-liquid PG/VG ratio should correspond to atomizer design and coil resistance. Lower-powered MTL setups generally perform well with relatively fluid formulations such as 50/50 PG/VG.

Subohm RDL and DTL atomizers may support higher-VG liquids when their coils and wicking channels are designed for the increased viscosity.

When installing a new coil, allow sufficient time for the wick to become fully saturated before vaping. Proper priming helps protect the heating element and provides consistent performance from the first use.

Matching an atomizer to your mod

Before purchasing, check atomizer diameter, connection, required output and coil compatibility. A compact MTL clearomizer places very different demands on a mod than a large subohm tank or dual-coil RDA.

The mod must provide sufficient wattage and battery capacity for the selected atomizer. Lower-powered MTL configurations consume relatively little energy, while high-output DTL setups require considerably more battery capacity.

With rebuildable atomizers, battery safety, resistance measurement and understanding Ohm's law become particularly important for subohm and mechanical setups.

Discover atomizers at Viper Smoke

Explore atomizers at Viper Smoke for different vaping styles. Replaceable-coil clearomizers, RTAs, RDAs and RDTAs provide different balances of convenience, e-liquid capacity and build customisation.

Compare diameter, tank capacity, coil or deck type, airflow system and required output before choosing your atomizer. This helps identify the model best suited to your mod, e-liquid and preferred draw from discreet MTL to powerful subohm DTL.
